Vaginal Dilators

What is a dilator?

A dilator is a product that can be inserted into either the vagina or anus to gradually enlarge the body opening and accustom the body’s muscles to the insertion of a penis or dildo, especially a penis or dildo that is larger than what the person’s body can comfortably accommodate at the present. This article is about vaginal dilators.

Why use a vaginal dilator?

A vaginal dilator is used as a training and exercise device to help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which helps make vaginal intercourse more comfortable. It allows you to practice enjoying penetration at your own pace, without the added pressure of a partner being present. It can help train your body and mind to enjoy penetration, and helps expand your vaginal canal in gradual steps.

Some women experience pain and discomfort during intercourse, a condition called dyspareunia. Common causes can include vaginismus, a condition where the muscles of the vaginal wall spasm involuntarily during penetration. Emotional factors such as stress or a history of abuse, a naturally small vaginal canal, as well as several other factors may contribute. Your doctor and sexual counselor are the best people to help narrow down the cause and provide advice specific to your condition.

How do you use a vaginal dilator?

There are instructions included with dilator kits. We carry the Dr. Laura Berman’s line of dilators such as the Dr. Berman Alena Dilator, Dr. Berman Isabelle Dilator, and Dr. Berman Dilator Set. We also carry the Inspire Dilator which includes 5 different sized dilators. These sets are intended to assist women in having more pleasurable sex. Whether you want to learn to have sex without discomfort or you just want to train your pelvic floor muscles to enjoy sex more, the dilator sets are a great option.

Start with the smallest circumference and slowly work your way up to the largest. Use a water-based lubricant such as Waterslide, and slowly insert the dilator to your comfort level. You may also use silicone or oil-based lubricants on dilators which have no silicone. Remember to only use a water-based lubricant on silicone.

If you experience discomfort with intercourse, are unable to have intercourse, or experience sexual anxiety, you will want to start off slowly. It may take you several sessions to get comfortable with one size dilator. Once you are comfortable you may wish to turn on the vibration option to increase sensation which will lead to more lubrication and relaxation, as well as pleasure.

The Dr. Berman Dilator Set includes a vibrating dilator which may be used independently or with the 3 graduated interchangeable interlocking dilator sleeves and a soft silicone sleeve. This unique interlocking system secures your dilator to the sleeves. Stack the sleeves to the desired size. For extra comfort and versatility, slip on the silicone sleeve.
